ACANot licensed yet

Not licensed yet to sell ACA: 9 steps

We start at the very beginning. Everything below is in order and each step depends on the one before it.

Want to Sell ACA? Getting-Started Guide
  1. Obtain a Life & Health insurance license

Complete a study course, sit the state exam, then apply through your state's Department of Insurance.

  2. Complete fingerprinting

Book through IdentoGO by IDEMIA on 888-467-2080, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Central. Book it the day you pass. The turnaround is the part people underestimate.

  3. Obtain Errors & Omissions (E&O) insurance

Carriers will not appoint you without it. The guide's recommended provider is NAPA Benefits E&O, at $1,000,000 per claim and $3,000,000 aggregate.

  4. Complete ACA certification for FFM states

If you are selling in the Federally Facilitated Marketplace you certify with CMS. Watch the walkthrough before you start.

  5. Complete ACA certification for state-based exchanges

You certify with each state individually and use that state's own quoting and enrollment platform. Ask us for the IAT ACA State-Based Exchange Agent Guide, it puts all 24 jurisdictions, their certification paths and their platforms in one place.

  6. Contract with ACA carriers

The guide's recommendation is blunt: get contracted with every carrier in the state you plan to sell in.

  7. Set up HealthSherpa

Your quoting and enrollment platform, and it is free to agents because it is carrier funded.

  8. Contract with hospital indemnity and ancillary carriers

Hospital indemnity: Allstate Health Solutions. Dental and vision: Ameritas Dental/Vision.

  9. Add life insurance carriers

Guaranteed issue life: AIG, Gerber, Great Western. Final expense and life: Foresters, American Amicable, Transamerica, Trinity, Mutual of Omaha.

Compliance. Hospital indemnity and other ancillary products are supplemental only. Never present them as a substitute for major medical coverage. Any non-ACA alternative sold to a subsidy-eligible consumer requires a signed client acknowledgment at the point of sale.
ACALicense in progress

Your exam is under way. Run fingerprinting and E&O in parallel with it rather than after it. That is where the weeks go.

Before you ask

Questions agents ask about contracting

What does it cost to get contracted through IAT?

Nothing is charged by Insurance Agent Training for the contracting itself. You are responsible for your own licensing costs, the pre-licensing course, the state exam, fingerprinting and your E&O coverage, which are paid to those providers, not to us. The one figure the guides do quote is AHIP at $125 with our discount link.

Can I get contracted if I already write with another upline?

It depends on the carrier and on your existing appointments. Call the office on (210) 972‑9558 and we will look at your situation before you submit anything.

How long does contracting take?

The part we control is fast. The parts we do not, state fingerprinting turnaround and each carrier's own review queue, set the real timeline. Book fingerprinting the day you pass your exam; that is where most of the waiting actually happens.

Do I have to buy training to get contracted?

No. Contracting and training are separate. The courses and SmartBooks are there when you want them.

Next step

Still not sure where you fit?

Call the office and we will place you in the right path in about five minutes.
