Is It Too Late to Sell Medicare This AEP? What New Agents Need to Do Now

No—it is not automatically too late to sell Medicare during AEP just because you weren’t ready on October 15. However, you must complete the licensing, training, contracting, and carrier requirements before you begin selling. Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, with coverage changes generally effective January 1. www.medicare.gov
The real question is: “Can I become ready to sell and serve clients properly before AEP ends?”
Start by checking these items:
- State license: Verify that your health insurance license is active in the states where you will work.
- Annual Medicare training: Complete the training and testing your carriers accept.
- Carrier certifications: Complete the required product training for the plans you intend to offer.
- Contracting and appointments: Confirm that each carrier has approved the necessary requirements.
- Ready-to-sell status: Obtain confirmation before conducting sales for that carrier. A submitted contracting application is not the same as approval.
CMS requires agents to be appropriately licensed and complete annual training and testing. Its 2027 guidelines also address plan-specific knowledge, marketing requirements, and enrollment procedures. www.cms.gov
What should a new agent focus on first?
Build a manageable starting point: a defined service area, the plans you are authorized to offer, and a repeatable client-review process. Learn how to check doctors, prescriptions, pharmacies, costs, and coverage restrictions before recommending a plan.
For example, Daniel, a fictional newly licensed agent, finishes his training after AEP begins. He confirms carrier approval and works with a mentor before handling appointments. Starting later means he has fewer selling days; it does not justify skipping the preparation clients deserve.
The message for agents: You may still have time, but get ready before you get busy.
